The Danish invention RoboBraille wins international recognition

London – 17 June 2009: On Wednesday evening the social, economical and environmental advantages of information and communication technology were celebrated in London. Awards were presented to busi-nesses and organisations which  have managed to promote the innovative use ICT The Danish email service RoboBraille was named winner of the category “Reaching the Digitally Excluded” as the  service makes otherwise inaccessible electronic texts accessible to  people with visual impairments or reading problems.

”Obviously, we are extremely proud of this recognition. It brings focus on the fact that digital information can play a crucial role in creating  self-reliance, independence and self-sufficiency in daily life for as many people as possible”, said Lars Bailleu Christensen, RoboBraille coordinator and director of development at Synscenter Refsnæs. He accepted the award with Shirley Evans from the British RoboBraille-partner, The Royal National Collage for The Blind.

RoboBraille can translate electronic documents into Braille or audio files in different languages. Further-more, the service can convert inaccessible documents into more accessible formats. The e-mail service is used by sending an attached document to speech@robobraille.org. The result is returned to the user, usually within a matter of minutes.
